ASTM STANDARDS- Current status

After the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) concluded that cable locks and trigger locks did not meet their preliminary evaluation, the CPSC felt that minimum safety standards should be developed. A meeting was called at the headquarters of the ASTM. Industry participants were invited to attend the meeting including; the NSSF, NRA, Consumer Federation of America, National Safe Kids Campaign, The Brady Campaign, major firearm manufacturer’s and gun lock manufacturer’s (including Pro-Lok).

It was determined that standards should be developed and a new committee was formed. For the past two plus years the F15.53 Non-Integral Firearm Locking Devices Subcommittee has been working on the development of voluntary minimum standards.
