ORANGE, Calif., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The quality of gun locks and their ability to provide real protection to consumers have been placed in real question over recent months. This is made evident by the recalls of over 1 million gun locks and the failure of 30 out of 32 gun locks recently tested by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

``The quality and protection shortfalls of gun locks have prompted many States to consider adopting their own standards
that gun locks must meet. California has adopted the toughest and most stringent testing standards in the country,'' says Adam Weinraub, President of Pro-Lok, a gun lock manufacturer located in Orange, California.

``Pro-Lok is proud to announce that our gun lock model GL100C has passed the toughest testing in the country. The only independent, certified lab in the country, authorized by the State of California conducted the testing.'' California's proposed standards include testing that is intended to prevent ``unauthorized access'' to firearms as opposed to just ``accidental discharge.'' Unauthorized access standards are intended to prevent many children as well as adults from gaining access to a firearm with the physical intent to remove the lock. A summary of the tests passed includes:

``In addition to our GL100C lock passing, our GL200C lock has passed all of the tests with the exception of the size.'' Weinraub adds, ``We just need to add a small dimension change in order to prevent the trigger guard to be cut off. We anticipate that this lock will pass the California standards when our work is shortly completed.'' Weinraub states, ``To my knowledge, Pro-Lok manufactures the only gun locks in the country that have accomplished this superior feat to date. Many critics have said a lock can't be made at a reasonable price that will pass California testing, while still, others have said it can't be done at all. We have proved a lot of people wrong. It is very satisfying to know that we are producing an affordable product that has the potential to save a number of lives''.

The CPSC called for voluntary standards to be developed as a result of their testing. Weinraub offers the following comments. ``The process to develop voluntary standards on gun locks has begun. Although this is a big step in the right direction, I don't expect this to be a very quick process. If and when voluntary standards are adopted, they will only be voluntary and I would not expect them to be close to the testing levels adopted by California. Mr. Weinraub also indicates that Pro-Lok will not rest on their current accomplishments. ``We are in the process of making additional changes that will make our locks even better''.
